Oscar was one of eight sons of William and Emma. Three of his brothers were also0 in the military: Arthur was in the army and was killed in action, Edwin was in the army, was a German prisoner of war, but survived, and Herbert was in the Royal Marines Infantry and survived.

Oscar William HOGG, son of William Germany HOGG (c. 1847- ) and Emma CLARKE (c. 1850-c. 1924), was born on 1 January 1877 in North Lopham, Norfolk. On 1 June 1893 Oscar joined the Royal Navy, serving on HMS Impregnable, a training vessel. In the 1901 Census (31 Mar 1901) he appeared At Sea - 24, able seaman, on board gun vessel ‘Rattler’, stationed at The Cape of Good Hope but at Sierra Leone on Census day. The last found date for Oscar’s service was 18.04.1919 with a note ‘Shore on Demob’ - presumably his final service date. Oscar died circa 1930. He was buried on 29 January 1930 in Harrow, Middlesex.
